Roger Newman is a 78 year old married retired teacher who has lived in Westgate/Westbrook for the last 40 years. He has been an LGBT activist for many years, focussing on the distinctive needs of the older LGBT community. With the support of the Alzheimer’s Society he co-founded a network for LGBT carers of those with dementia which, at the time, was the only one of its kind in the World. Since then he has actively been involved with the engagement work of National AgeUK, and with diversity issues both in the Police force and the Media. More recently he co-founded the Thanet LGBT50+ Group.
Roger has spoken at conferences worldwide and has co-authored a number of books on themes such as dementia care and LGBT ageing, and he actively involves himself in the worlds of Facebook and Twitter.
Roger’s interests range widely over gardening, classical music, art history and family history and, with his husband Nigel he enjoys travelling. In 2007 he was awarded the MBE for his charitable work.
